At 1:45 Faith fetched her cases downstairs. Thomas helped her carry them to the car. The portrait of James the robot, he assured her again he wanted to buy it. Offered to pay a substantial sum for it. Faith was tempted but stuck to her word, if he wanted it, it was his gratis. She also knew the time to ask questions was now or never, and she pounced, before Thomas had chance to vanish upstairs again on some pretext or the other.

“Tom, will you answer me one question before you go?” she pleaded. “Just tell me if the work I have been doing here was really necessary. You can tell me that, if nothing else.”

Thomas shook his head, a look of exasperation clouding his handsome face. “Faith, I have already told you more than I should have done. Was the work you have been doing here necessary?” He hunched his shoulders. “Useful, is all I can say.”

“So I am right in thinking that the only reason I was offered this job of monitoring the robot was to get me out of the way, was it?”

“Well if you really must know, yes it was. You were asking too many questions. Wanted to know what the boys in the back room were doing, as you put it. You were like a dog with a bone, wouldn’t let it drop. The thing is, you were getting too close for comfort, so that is why I came up with the idea of you monitoring the robot. A nice break for you and for us at the firm also.”

“So Mr. Knight, it’s you I have to thank for being locked away in a remote country cottage for weeks on end, is it?”

Thomas shrugged his shoulders.” You were becoming a liability, Ms. Davis. All the work we had put into the project we had been working on, one word from you could have blown it all out the window.”

“That is ridiculous, Mr. Knight, and you know it. I know nothing about all the big plans you have been working on. But perhaps now would be the right time to tell me, don’t you think?”

“Faith, if I told you what we have been working on and anything got out, we would be in big trouble and when I say big, I am talking about number 10.”

“Well, Mr. Knight… Thomas, as we are now back on first name terms,” she remarked sarcastically,. “don’t you think the time has now come to tell me everything? You have my word I will keep anything of importance you tell me to myself. If it means signing the official secrets act then so be it. I will do it.”

Faith could see by the look on Thomas’s handsome face, that he didn’t want to make any decision he might later come to regret. She didn’t want to push him too hard for answers, but at the same time, time was getting short, and it was a case of now or never. She
